Abstract

Background: Xenical, which is the first and only over-the-counter (OTC) oral medicine, is being prescribed to patients for weight loss and maintenance. The objective of this study was to assess the efficacy of xenical (the active ingredient in the brand Xenical) in the maintenance treatment of overweight and obese patients with obesity-related diseases. Materials and methods: We enrolled a total of 726 overweight and obese patients with obesity-related diseases (HbA1c >7%) and weight-related diseases (BMI >30 kg/m2) who were prescribed orlistat (Xenical, OTC) at least once a week for the first 2 years (mean duration of the study, 28 months) to compare the effects of orlistat (Xenical) with placebo. The primary objective was to assess the efficacy of the study to the maintenance treatment of the patient with obesity-related diseases. Secondary objectives included determining the clinical effectiveness of the study, the impact of the study on the patient, the incidence of weight-related side effects, and the overall risk of adverse events. Analyses were performed with a statistical significance level of p<0.05. Results: In the primary endpoints, a statistically significant improvement was found in BMI and weight loss rates with orlistat compared to placebo, whereas no significant difference was observed between the two groups. There was no significant difference in the incidence of weight-related side effects. Conclusion: In the clinical effectiveness of xenical in the treatment of overweight and obese patients with obesity-related diseases, the efficacy of orlistat was found to be comparable with that of placebo, but the incidence of weight-related side effects was more pronounced in the overweight patients and obese patients with weight-related diseases. Although the effects of orlistat on weight loss were comparable to that of placebo, the results of the study were most significant. Conclusion: Although the effects of orlistat on the treatment of obesity-related diseases are comparable to that of placebo, the results of this study are not so significant that they warrant further investigation. We recommend the use of orlistat in the treatment of overweight and obese patients with obesity-related diseases. The results of this study may provide the basis for further studies to evaluate the efficacy of orlistat in patients with obesity-related diseases.

Orlistat, sold under the brand name Xenical in the UK and globally, is a weight loss drug that contains the active ingredient orlistat. Orlistat is a lipase inhibitor and works by blocking the enzyme that breaks down fat in the diet. Lipases are the system produced by the digestive tract and are the second and third-most abundant structures in the body after the existedent and natural fats. Lipases are quickly broken down by the body and are thought to be responsible for the absorption of about 1 in 25 of all fat absorbed by the body in the first 12 hours after a meal. In the long term, lipases help to break down some of the fat absorbed by the body and lower the amount of fat absorbed. Orlistat blocks about 90% of the fat absorbed in the body and therefore helps to reduce the amount of fat absorbed. Orlistat is used in adults and adolescents from 12 years of age to reduce the amount of fat absorbed by the body. Orlistat should be taken as prescribed and as directed by your doctor. In the majority of people with a low dose of orlistat, weight loss by using this drug is achieved only when treatment is started at a low dose and maintained until the person is 70 years of age or older. Most patients find that this drug is effective when started at a low dose and maintained until the person is 80 years of age or older. Orlistat should be taken with food to avoid the absorption of the drug. However, if this drug is taken with alcohol, or if the person has recently consumed a large amount of alcohol, then the effect of the drug may be impaired. In some cases, the effect of the drug may not be complete until the person is 45 years of age or older. In such cases, orlistat can be taken with food to reduce the alcohol intake and to prevent the loss of muscle mass and fat in the body. In such cases, orlistat may be taken with food to reduce the alcohol intake and to prevent the loss of muscle mass and fat in the body. Alcohol can also be added to the diet of patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus.
